Timeline Builder FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about the Timeline Builder.
General
What types of documents can I use with the Timeline Builder?
The Timeline Builder works with any document format supported by Judicio, including PDF, DOCX, DOC, and scanned images (via OCR). For best results with scanned documents, ensure the scans are clear and legible.
How accurate is the date extraction?
Accuracy depends on document quality and complexity. For well-structured contracts and agreements with clearly stated dates, accuracy is typically above 95%. Accuracy may be lower for:
- Handwritten documents or poor-quality scans
- Documents with ambiguous date references ("the anniversary of the date hereof")
- Dates expressed in unusual formats or languages
Always review the extracted timeline and use inline editing to correct any errors.
Can I build a timeline from multiple documents?
Yes. You can add any number of documents to a single timeline. Judicio merges all extracted dates into a unified chronology and tracks the source document for each date. The By Document view lets you see dates grouped by their source.
What languages are supported?
The Timeline Builder supports date extraction from documents in English and most major European languages. Date formats are handled automatically regardless of regional conventions (DD/MM/YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY, written-out dates, etc.).
Templates
Do I have to use a template?
No. If you do not select a template, Judicio uses the General template, which extracts all recognizable dates without prioritizing any specific type. However, choosing a relevant template typically improves accuracy and relevance for your specific matter type.
Can I create my own templates?
Yes. You can create custom templates by selecting which date types to prioritize. Custom templates are saved to your organization and can be shared with team members. See Date Types and Templates for instructions.
Can I change the template after extraction?
You can re-run the extraction with a different template at any time. This creates a new version of the timeline. Your previous version and any edits you made are preserved and can be accessed from the version history.
Views and navigation
Can I use multiple views at the same time?
The Timeline Builder shows one view at a time, but you can switch instantly between views using the view selector. Filters and search terms are preserved when switching.
What does the confidence indicator mean?
Confidence reflects how certain the AI is about an extraction:
- High -- The date and its context are unambiguous.
- Medium -- The date is likely correct, but the surrounding language has some ambiguity.
- Low -- The AI detected a possible date but is uncertain about the value or category. These entries should be reviewed carefully.
Can I print the timeline view?
Yes. You can either use your browser's print function or export the timeline as a PDF. The PDF export preserves the layout of your current view and includes formatting suitable for printing.
Editing
Can I undo an edit?
Individual cell edits do not have an undo button, but every change is tracked in the edit history. You can view the history for any date entry and see the previous value. If you need to revert, manually change the value back to the previous one shown in the history.
Can I add dates that are not in my documents?
Yes. Use the Add Date button to manually enter dates such as court hearing dates, internal deadlines, or dates from external sources. Manually added dates are marked with a Manual badge to distinguish them from AI-extracted dates.
Will my edits be preserved if I re-run extraction?
Yes. Re-running extraction with a new template creates a new version of the timeline. Your edited version is preserved in the version history and can be accessed at any time.
Export
Can I export only certain dates?
Yes. You can export a subset of dates in two ways:
- Filter first -- Apply filters in Table View (by date range, category, or document), then export. Only the filtered dates are included.
- Select and export -- In Table View, check the rows you want and select Export Selected.
What format should I use for court filings?
PDF is generally the best choice for court filings. It produces a formatted, paginated document with a cover page and clear headings. Use A4 or Letter page size depending on your jurisdiction's requirements.
Can I schedule recurring exports?
Yes. Use Export > Schedule Export to set up daily, weekly, or monthly exports sent by email. This is useful for ongoing deadline monitoring.
Credits and pricing
How many credits does a timeline cost?
Credits are charged based on the number of pages processed across all documents in the timeline. See Credits Explained for the current per-page rate.
Credit Cost
Re-running extraction with a different template consumes additional credits. Editing existing dates, changing views, and exporting do not consume credits.
Does editing or exporting use credits?
No. Only the initial extraction (and any re-extraction with a new template) uses credits. Editing dates, switching views, and exporting are free operations.
What happens if I run out of credits mid-extraction?
If your credit balance runs out during extraction, Judicio processes as many pages as your remaining credits allow and pauses. You can purchase additional credits and resume extraction from where it stopped.
Troubleshooting
The timeline is missing dates I expected to find.
Try the following:
- Check the template -- Make sure the template you used prioritizes the type of dates you are looking for. Switch to a more specific template or the General template.
- Check document quality -- If the document is a scan, the OCR may have missed some text. Open the source document and verify the text is readable.
- Add manually -- If the AI did not detect a date, you can always add it manually using the Add Date button.
Dates are showing the wrong year or format.
Date parsing can occasionally be ambiguous, especially with formats like 01/02/2025 (which could be January 2 or February 1 depending on convention). Select the date cell to correct it using the date picker. Choosing a specific template that matches the document's jurisdiction can help the AI interpret regional date formats correctly.
Extraction is taking longer than expected.
Processing time depends on document size and complexity. If extraction is taking significantly longer than the estimates in Getting Started, check that your documents are not unusually large (thousands of pages) or contain complex embedded content. You can navigate away and return later -- extraction continues in the background.
