Archiving Projects

When a matter is concluded or a project is no longer active, you can archive it to keep your workspace clean. Archived projects are hidden from your main project list but remain fully intact -- you can restore them at any time to pick up where you left off.

Why archive instead of delete?

ActionWhat happensReversible?
ArchiveProject is hidden from the main list but all data is preservedYes -- restore at any time
DeleteProject and all its contents are permanently removedNo -- cannot be recovered
Deleting is permanent

Only delete a project when you are certain you will never need its documents, analyses, research, or timelines again. For most completed matters, archiving is the safer choice.

How to archive a project

  1. Open the project you want to archive.
  2. Go to the project settings (gear icon or Settings tab).
  3. Select Archive Project.
  4. Confirm the action.

The project is immediately moved to the archived state. It no longer appears in your active project list or sidebar, but all its data remains intact.

Only Owners can archive

Archiving a project is restricted to project Owners. Editors and Viewers cannot archive or restore projects.

What happens when a project is archived

  • The project disappears from the active project list for all team members.
  • All documents, reviews, research, timelines, and translations within the project are preserved but not accessible from the regular interface.
  • Team member assignments and roles are retained so that when the project is restored, everyone has the same access they had before.
  • The project's activity history continues to record the archive event itself.
  • No credits are consumed while a project is archived.

Viewing archived projects

To see your archived projects:

  1. Open Projects from the sidebar.
  2. Select the Archived tab or filter.
  3. Browse the list of archived projects.

Each archived project shows its name, description, the date it was archived, and the number of documents it contains.

Restoring an archived project

To bring an archived project back to your active workspace:

  1. Navigate to the Archived projects view.
  2. Find the project you want to restore.
  3. Select Restore.
  4. Confirm the action.

The project reappears in your active project list with all its contents, team members, and history intact -- exactly as it was before archiving.

Restore for follow-up work

Archiving and restoring is ideal for matters that may reactivate. For example, if a transaction falls through but may resume later, archive the project rather than deleting it. If the deal comes back to life, restore it and continue where you left off.

Bulk archiving

If you need to archive multiple projects at once:

  1. Open Projects from the sidebar.
  2. Select the projects you want to archive using the checkboxes.
  3. Select Archive Selected from the bulk actions menu.
  4. Confirm the action.

This is useful for end-of-year cleanup or when wrapping up multiple matters simultaneously.

Best practices

  • Archive promptly when a matter concludes. This keeps your active project list focused on current work.
  • Use project descriptions to note the final status of a matter before archiving. This saves time if you need to restore it months later and want to remember where things stood.
  • Review archived projects periodically. If a project has been archived for a long time and you are certain you will never need it again, consider deleting it to free up space.
  • Communicate with your team before archiving a shared project. Make sure all team members have downloaded any exports they need.
